Let's Play Marais!
Let's Play Marais! is a multi-part exploration of Marin Marais' "Les Folies d'Espagne" (variations on the medieval folia theme) presented by Lish during the COVID-19 shutdown via Zoom.
The first class (Mondays with Marais!) was dedicated to multiple woodwind professionals and university students studying the piccolo. The second session included musicians who are primarily flutists and of all ages/professions.
The July 2020 session ran for 5 weeks; the first 4 sessions broke down the variations into small chunks and the 5th was a recital of their favorite variations.
The second session ran in August 2020. Like the first class, learning about the historical context of La Folia helps connect with the melody, harmonic awareness opens the ears to what's common, what's different and what can change, personal style and experience influence the interpretation, and attention to the actual process of learning music is embraced.
Let's Play Marais! is not a master class to critique the musician/individual, but rather an exploration of the music and ourselves in a supportive environment.
Please contact Lish if you would like a Marais session.

Workshop Feedback
‘Let’s Play Marais!’ was a fun and helpful workshop for me as an intermediate level flute play. The material was new for me and will become a staple for future practice. Lish is a wonderful teacher, with structured and clear presentations. I have been in Lish’s classes before, so I new this series would be good. Lish also provides a wealth of resources for reference outside of the classes. Paul B.
"During the pandemic, Lish provided a weekly outlet for people to gather to learn about "Les Folies d'Espagne" by Marin Marais and piccolo, but mostly to learn and share with each other. She gave very targeted exercises to help everyone get the most out of each variation using a very open, positive and welcoming approach. Lish encouraged everyone to share their music with the group without making anyone feel pressured. Her enthusiasm about the music, piccolo and spending time with fellow enthusiasts was a bright spot, but especially during these challenging times!" Beth D.
"Lish made sure that all class attendees had worksheets and instructions well before the scheduled class. The classes were conducted with poise. She is well versed in ZOOM technology despite ongoing technology challenges. I would definitely recommend a flute masterclass from Lish Lindsey. " Carol J.
" 'Let's Play Marais!' was extremely beneficial to my piccolo playing. While focusing intensely on a single chord progression in many variations Lish had us explore a tremendous variety of practice methods to help our technique and interpretations of the music. In a short amount of time all aspects of my playing improved, including my tone, intonation, and articulation. Studying the same piece along with everyone in the workshop helped expand my own interpretation through hearing theirs. I highly recommend joining this class!" Eric L.
"The class is all about the Marais "Les Folies", but [Lish] offers strategies that will help you work on any piece. I did the four classes in July and they're great! Since we're not having flute camp this summer, this is a great way to whip your lips and brain into shape! Sign up!" Marta O.
